WHY COMMUNITY MATTERS;
A History of Non-Traditional Skateboarding

Why Community Matters is a personal and research driven project that explores the meaning of community through the lens of non-traditional skateboarding. Grounded in both academic and field research, this project challenges traditionally male dominated subculture theory and helps share the history of a community that has been unjustly ignored.

Consisting of an art book, zine, and a video element, Why Community Matters provides an in depth look at the history of non-traditional skateboarders as they have negotiated for space and identity. Through interviews with community leaders, experimental visuals, and iconic non-traditional skate videos, this project aims to provide an overarching message of the power of community based activities. Additionally, it dives deeper into why these community spaces help inform identities and create safe environments.
